I keep all my records by state, then county, then geographic location. You will need to be able to total up revenue by state for the state income tax forms.
All mine are from the same state. I don’t file taxes in that state because the amount they collect is too small to bother with (usually less than $1 a year and it’s not my state of residence.). If there is state tax being collected, it could be different, but even then I don’t know about the ins and outs of records in different states.
In some states, the operators take out the state portion of the taxes before sending royalties. You have to file a state income tax report in order to get a portion of it refunded. If you have royalties in other states, you do need to find out what you need to do for taxes in each state.
