I have interest in 3 old vertical wells in Grant Dist. 2 active, 1 abandoned. Will the company use the same API number when they begin drilling the new (fracking) wells? How soon do they pull a permit before drilling the new well?
thanks :)

Anna: To answer your first question, No, a new API # WILL BE USED. If your wells are within a unit Usually 640 acres +, than the fun begins. To start with, you need to know your map and partial number within Grant District so that when a permit is issued you will know if your wells are within the unit. If you know who the company is that is or was drilling the wells, than they will know if they have assigned the unit to another company that drills horizontal wells. The answer to your last question," could take years". Now that I have completely confused you, I will ask some of the members of this forum that is a whole lot smarter than I to add comments.
I was told 1st well was being drilled first week October (this year) 2nd well is being planned for 1st week of November, and possible will drill several more after that. I have been watching for permits on original API number...did I mention Im 'new' to this stuff~? :)
Anna, is the company that is drilling the Vertical Wells the same company that is drilling the horizontal (doubt-ful). There is a tool that we all use here to check on permits issued, comes out weekly." West virginia Department of Environmental protection oil and gas" than go to Weekly report. If you could provide us with the Map and Partial someone on the forum might be able to help find the API number, providing it has been issued.

thanks Nancy and Arnold, yes I have been checking the above link, weekly. Antero is the company doing the new drilling. I was checking that site by watching for the farm name (currently) and the original wells API numbers in Doddridge country..also looking only under the 'lease MODs' listed.
Fracking is NOT a type of well it is a process they do with a well, just as cementing and other stages.
Does anyone know how far in advance the oil company obtains the Permit to drill?
thanks
Anna, As far as I can tell, there is no set time frame tying the date of permit to date that the well is drilled. The drilling schedule changes constantly. The leasing company usually wants to have as much acreage leased as they can afford. This is true for numerous reasons. Once they drill a well that produces anything, they then have that property locked up for as long as it continues to produce. As a general rule, the more acreage they control, the more leverage they have to entice investors. When the lease is negotiated it should include a time frame for having to drill. I may be wrong, but as far as I know, there is no state mandated expiration date on a drilling permit. I know that I have one permit on my property that was assigned in 1962. It was never drilled, but still shows up on the DEP maps.
I am getting leery of the people Antero is sending out to make deals. Our family has dealt with 3 different Landmen. Our wells were scheduled to be drilled first week of Oct. and second first week of November. The last I checked..no permit/s have been pulled, but I could be wrong. I have the original API numbers and the farm name were they were located, but that's as far as I got. The Landman said she handed all her paperwork over to the office and everything was on track. This has been such a long haul getting all the family together on this, I think they could have alittle better communication with the people they are dealing with or trying to deal with. *sigh
Yes agree about the landman attitude. You good friend until you sign then usually that's the last you hear. Then you need to find out who is the internal (Antero) land department employee who has charge of your area. Even that person is probably too busy to be very helpful. They have what they want.
They are NOT FRACKING wells,, its just a process in drilling the well, just like flossing is a process in brushing your teeth. They first will drill each well 4,6, 8 or 12 (if you are lucky) then the fracking is done after cementing, so there are several process. They started one of mine in Doddridge county July, 2013 and was turned in line this July 2014.
agreed Nancy
