Back in September we went over, “Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission Website 101,” Consider this your “102” class. The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) website is at www.cogcc.state.co.us.

COGCC Rules

Much of the state oversight on oil and gas activity falls under the COGCC which oversight is dictated by their rules and regulations. From the main website, click on “Rules,” and you’ll see various rules and regulations referenced. The rules generally begin at 100 and end with the 1200 series. You can click on a specific topic such as “noise” under Series 800 or download all of the rules under the “Complete Rules.”

Oil & Gas Lingo

The Oil and Gas industry and inherently the COGCC website is filled with oil and gas lingo that may be difficult to decipher. For a leg up on this verbiage, click on “Help” and you’ll see a wide range of options. Topics such as “Glossary” are helpful for general information. The “Frequently Asked Questions,” provides common information requests that assist in using the website. Additionally, “Status Code,” help decipher the status of well. In related area, under “General” you can also find “Answer to typical questions,” about what COGCC does and how oil and gas activity takes place in Colorado. Finally, the “Surface Owner Brochure,” is a nice ‘cheat’ sheet for wherever you may be in the process and what your rights may include as a surface owner.
