Descent and distribution in Texas

My family and I own property that we inherited from a great-uncle in 1988. He was unmarried and had no children. Both parents and all of his siblings pre-deceased him.

Since that time, our ownership has always been figured per stirpes, by many various oil companies. Just recently, one of them has changed the way that the ownership is figured. Looks like he’s gone per capita. Has the law changed recently in some way that would require a change in how the distribution is figured? Or is there a choice of how to do this? We are trying to understand why the change after all these years.

Dear John_Allen,

There was a change in descent and distribution effective for Texas properties in, I think, 1993. I would have tio look up some notes tio be sure.

Thre change in interpretation could be based in new information, or shoddy title work, the latter being thre most common.

Best,
