Does a well’s name always indicate its location?

If a well has a name like “Robert 1-5H”, does that mean it’s a horizontal well going from Section 5 through 1 and that any mineral rights owner in that specific township & range within sections 1 through 5 may have been pooled (depending on the Lots) into that well? It’s located in Sect. 5.

What does a well named “1-H Robert 20-17” mean in that context? It’s located in Sect. 20

Brita, the answer to your question is, no. The name frequently does, but not always, indicate the location.

If you gave the actual legal description I could have looked it up and told you where a particular well does begin and end or you could do so yourself from the GIS server map on the NDIC O&G Division site, or by doing a well search on the same site. I hope this helps

Quite often it does. The Daisy Bradford No. 3 was drilled on Daisy Bradford's farm.

Sometimes. 20-17 could mean Sec. 20, Block 17 if you are in Texas. I also see a lot of wells named after movie characters, jet plane models, you name it. Pun intended.
