Geophysical surveys

When they originally do a geophysical survey will they drill bore holes? Or only do that if a well is already being drilled?? Also, what damage could be done to the land that would be of concern when doing a geophysical survey?

Thank you

There are three basic types of energy sources for seismic surveys:

Shot holes / filled with explosive charges

Vibrator / trucks with pads shaking the earth

Weight drops / literally drop the heavy weight from a height (e.e. 5-10') to create energy source

Seismic can be done at any time during exploration process. Or may not be tied to specific exploration at all.

As for damages, you are talking about different issues with different types of seismic acquisition.

Thank you for your quick reply. We received a request to allow a company to do a geophysical survey of the property but the lease states that any damage done would be our responsibility covered by the original lease $ amount. I have no idea what damage 'might' be done.

It depends on the type of seismic being acquired - suggest you get an O&G attorney familiar with seismic permits to help you out on this.

If shot holes are drilled, normally damage for each hole. And requirements to back fill holes. And issues about distance of shots / vibrators to water wells, structures, key trees, etc.

Lots of variables - way way too much to address here.
