Welcome to the MRForum- don't be put off... your title is excellent. Yes, it is true- the world of oil and gas can be a bit confusing and obscure but rest assured there are no snakes or cutthroats trying to take advantage of your lack of knowledge in this area. Just joking... of course there are-- just as in any industry-- and you are smart to reach out and ask for advice. Most of the folks I have met in the O/G business are fine individuals and straight-shooters so kindly start out by telling the nice people on this forum when your dad signed a lease, with which company, who informed you that you were in three units, names of the units, etc... that will help facilitate some information you can use. Straight off, my advice is to get an attorney that comes trusted and recommended to evaluate your estate and look into your best interests. But take any and all advice with a grain of salt-- and ask for a second opinion from those you trust. Best regards --

Dear Veronica,
Don't sweat the occasional rotten apple. She does not even know that dingleberries is only one word.
From the overall niceness of people here to the practical business insight, Drake gave great advice.
Drake, I see you are in Tyler. I was born in Tyler and the family is from Brownsboro. Best wishes to you for stepping in for Veronica. Oh, and Veronica, my wife is a Latina from Bolivia.
To answer your question, after the well goes to sales, royalty will start flowing abut 45 days after you return the division order that will be sent to you. How long it takes an operator to send a division order is a topic much discussed here.

WADE CALDWELL - THAT IS TOTALLY EXCELLENT. THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!

I believe that link Wade Caldwell just posted is about as good as it gets for entry level questions and explanations concerning possible mineral ownership... I had not seen that before... very helpful, Wade. At some point you and your family may need to enlist the service of a "landman"-- and the good ones are often women-- to trace back your father's mineral estate in Frio County. Going rate is around $400 a day and it should not take too many days to run the title-- but that can depend on many things. It is usually good to hire local landmen familiar with the county so maybe ask the county clerk for a recommendation-- if not, use Google to search Frio county landmen. Best of luck to you.
Buddy, I know a few Cottens around town-- very decent folk. Hopefully your wife takes you south of the equator from time to time-- it really is amazing down there. Best regards ---

Drake,
My brother in law and his family lives in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. It is a host city of the World Cup and we have a place to stay. Sadly, we cannot go this year.
We have been before and explored Minas Gerais, which is basically like a state here.
When his family came to visit us one year, I spent a week learning a few phrases in Portuguese and I was so proud of myself. I told him "Good to see you again!" in Portuguese and he responded in Spanish. I was crushed. He told me that he could not understand my Portuguese and said we better stick to Spanish.
The first place the three nephews ranging in age from 24 to 18 wanted to go was NASA, then to Hooters. Tio Buddy was happy to be the tour guide.
