My wife has inherited mineral interests. Several of the interests are over-riding royalty interests (ORRI). These ORRI and their leases are from the 50’s. What is the simplest way to confirm whether the lease has expired?
The term is certainly over on a lease that old. Checking the description on the state oil and gas maps to see if production has stopped in the tracts. If it has, the lease is expired.
I have leases and Overrides that go back to the 1920’s and still in effect, so you have to do some legwork. If you give the state and county and a description such as abstract or section, township and range, we may be able to help. Post in the correct state and county. Or go to the oil & gas commission website for your state of interest and use their GIS maps to look wells that may cross over the acreage. Some old leases had shallow vertical wells that now have deeper horizontals crossing underneath.
