How do I find Recorded Mineral Leases in North Dakota?

Hi,

I’m going to be in Williston the end of July. I will spend a few days in courthouses in Williams and McKenzie Counties looking for mineral leases on tracts I am the trustee for. First, can you please confirm that all executed mineral leases are recorded in North Dakota? Second, does anyone have a quick summary of how to actually find the leases in the counties’ property records? I will be searching by the lessor’s name (an individual, not corporate entity).

Thanks and best regards,

Bob

Mineral leases in North Dakota are recorded in the County courthouses. To find them, the only way I know is to have the legal land description as that is how they would be recorded. They may have other ways and if they are all computerized, that is very possible.

You can look up recorded documents online but there is a cost and its limited data depending on the county…most are on NDRIN but the two you are looking for are not.

Non NDRIN counties: http://www.servnd.org/ McKenzie: https://www.mcvvault.com/

Thanks for the information. I also found out that Williams County has all of its property records from patent to present on idocmarket.com. McKenzie County does not use idocmarket.com. It is a subscription service ($15/month) but it sounds like a good way to get started for someone like me who is out-of-state with respect to North Dakota.
