Tracy, try this link to try and look up the original deed Carter County | OKCountyRecords.com | County Clerk Public Land Records for Oklahoma. This may provide you some clue to the type of mineral interest. Carter Co has scanned images back to 1909.

Welcome to the community, there are lots of great people that provide information here.

You should start with researching the land records in Carter County:

To answer your question of the most common types of mineral interests, these are:

  • Royalty Interests: These are non-cost-bearing interests, meaning the owner does not bear the expenses of drilling or maintaining a well. Instead, the royalty owner is compensated based on a lease or pooling order, typically receiving a percentage of production revenue. This is an interest in land even if a surface interest is not owned.
  • Overriding Royalty Interests (ORRI): This type of interest is often earned by individuals who contribute to the discovery or development of a well, such as geologists or landmen. Like royalty interests, an ORRI is non-cost-bearing and entitles the holder to a portion of the production revenue.
  • Working Interests: These are held by those who invest in the development and operation of a well, such as the operator. Unlike royalty interests, working interest holders are responsible for the costs associated with drilling and maintenance. Most individuals who inherit mineral rights do not receive a working interest unless their family was heavily involved in the industry.

Thank you for information you provided much appreciated!

I have one more question My sister and I inherited our mothers mineral rights after her death in 2019 We laged on taking care of it finally got our BP #'s last week. My question is how to find out if any royalties since the time she passed to the present Have been paid to her if any.

Thank you

Make sure that you have filed the probate documents in the county courthouse in Carter Co (with the recorder of deeds). You need to contact Exxon’s Division Order department as the operator and ask them. The well is a gas well with a bit of oil/condensate. Go to their website to see which office to contact. The original permit was out of their office in Fort Worth back in 2013. They will need copies of your probate documents and you and your sister’s name and contact information. Ask them what else you need to get into pay status and also if they have any funds in suspense or turned over to the state’s treasurer’s office.

Check unclaimed property in your mother’s home state as well as any state where minerals were produced.
