Not particularly easy to determine. You could go to the courthouse (maybe digitally) and look up what sales were in the area at that time. If there was production, you might be able to do a multiple of revenue depending upon the type of well. If no sales and no revenue, then your answer is “not much”.
If you asking due to potential capital gains, then talk to your CPA.
I am asking for capital gains reasons.
Do you have any experience with the company Petroleum Evaluation Group- an oil and mineral evaluation group. They offer services to help find info on the value of oil and mineral rights for capital gains and selling and buying of mineral rights. I talked to a gentleman with they’d group that said for a fee they can help find the value for 2003 to help decrease our capital gains using the step- up process of long term inherited assets. Wondering if this is a real thing.
I am not familiar with that particular group, but the process is familiar and is a real thing. The Directories tab above also has appraisers.
