- I took a weekend "Landman" course back in October 2012, since then I've been looking for an unpaid internship in the Barnett Shale. I've not had any responses to emails/phone calls. I'm now wondering if it just makes more sense to look for a job vs internship. I'm willing to travel wherever I need to for a job. I don't know anyone in the field and just changing careers, so any input/advice would be appreciated.
Tammy, have you looked at plays other than the Barnett? The Woodford in Oklahoma is hot right now as well as the Eagle Ford in S. Texas. The Bakken in N. Dakota is big but thats some serious travel and too cold for some people! Check the forum menus at the top of this page for Landman groups. Good Luck.

Do what you can to get your toe in the door. Right now there are landmen with many years experience that have been out of work for 6 months. You will need to look at something in Ohio, PA , MI Mont or ND, There is virtually nothing open around here, some little bit in Midland but low natural gas prices have shut down the Texas shale areas. Only where there is both oil and natural gas will you find an opening. Good luck, you will just need to keep asking until you find someone who is willing to train you.

Thank you! I've actually been looking all over the US. Hopefully something will come around soon.
