Law Firm Keeps Using Old Mailing Address

Can anyone give advice on how to get a law firm to send documents regarding my lease and drilling to the correct address? I have called them twice, and each time they tell me they have corrected my mailing address, and yet today the mailman from the town where I lived many years ago called to ask my address (once again) so he could forward the email. If I weren’t for the mailman who knows me personally, I would be missing out on a lot of important mail. Any advice?

Brenda: You need to notify the Oil Company of your new address, or better yet, file a change of address in the counties in which you own interests. Then the onus is on them to properly notify you. The law firm only mails to those persons/addresses given to them by the oil companies.

Thank you, Todd. I called Marathon Oil last week to make sure they had my correct mailing address. They confirmed they did. So, that didn’t work. Concerning filing an address change in the counties in which I own interest . . . that would be Garvin County and McClain County, Oklahoma. I’ve lived in Texas since 1975. I don’t understand how I could file a change of address form where I haven’t lived in 50 years or in a county where I have never lived. If I misunderstand, please let me know. I can be thick headed.

Brenda:

If you have notified Marathon, the operator & I presume the applicant for the cases at the OCC that the law firm is sending information for, you have no worries. Best guess is a landman picked up an old address from the records of the county clerk’s office. If you are definite that your current address is of record in the county clerk’s office of both Garvin & McClain, then you have nothing to worry about. If not, you should file a notice of your new address or current address if you will, regardless of how long you have lived there.

Thank you, Todd. Now we are getting somewhere. I am not at all certain my current address is on file in Garvin and McClain Counties. I’m not sure how I accomplish that. Do I contact those two County Clerks’ offices by phone or mail?

yes and yes. The clerk will be able to help you. It only costs a few dollars, but it is the legal place that it needs to be filed. The land men and companies start in the county courthouses for address when they are looking for you.

Thank you so much. As my grandmother would say, “You don’t know what you don’t know.”

Hi Brenda, Call the country clerks offices directly. You can find their numbers online - search Garvin county clerk for instance. They are usually very friendly and helpful. I was just at the Garvin clerks office and the women working there knew just where to lead. Good luck. That is where addresses are drawn from.

Hello, Rick. I phoned Garvin County today. You are correct, they were extremely helpful. Thank you.
