Los Angeles City Lot Mineral Rights Determination

Hello, Where can you find out what mineral rights you have for a house lot in LA City?

@websurf700, you would have to check the county records, probably all the way back to statehood, and see if any previous owner sold, retained or otherwise transferred or assigned the mineral rights for your portion of your section-township-range. If nobody ever did anything with the mineral rights and you are the fee owner of your surface lot, then you would also have the mineral rights. Typically in a housing development the builder or developer will retain the mineral rights if they are available and the residence owner will not obtain the mineral rights, but you won’t know until you check. You can use the California Oil & Gas Gis map https://maps.conservation.ca.gov/doggr/wellfinder/ to find your section-Township-Range. (Something like 27-1S-13W).

This will be an extensive search in the old records at the Recorder’s Office in Norwalk. The old records are a combination of Grantor/Grantee indexes maintained in hard copy books and microfiche/film. The more current day transactions are maintained on computer, but they are still grantor/grantee based.
