if you own minerals in a section and they drill a well, does everyone in that section get
paid or just people in the township where the well is drilled?

That’s a good question I was told it was by acreage
It depends on the spacing of the zone/formation they are drilling. The Woodford Shale they are spacing generally as 640 acres; 1 section, all the mineral owners in that section would be paid their share.
Thomas, a section is located within a township so the owners within the section are the ones who get paid. The link Don Bray posted goes into great detail on this subject. The short answer is most horizontal wells being drilled today are in 640 acre drilling and spacing units and everyone who owns mineral rights within that unit share in a proportionate amount of royalties. Vertical wells can be spaced in smaller units and the exact location of your minerals in the section would be a factor.
