Permian Basin reaches 2018 high rig count of 485, New Mexico at high of 107
Permian Basin reached a 2018 high of 485 active oil and gas drilling rigs, according to the Aug. 10 report from Baker Hughes. That’s an increase of 5 rigs in the previous week and 108 in the previous year. Texas lost 2 rigs in the past week for a total of 522 (459 a year ago), New Mexico added 5 for a 2018 high of 107 (61 a year ago) and the U.S. added 13 to reach a total of 1,057 (949 a year ago). Permian Basin remains the dominant region in the U.S. Other top regions as of Aug. 10 are Eagle Ford with 79 rigs (80 last week, 75 last year), Cana Woodford at 68 (68 last week, 63 last year), Williston at 56 (56 last week, 53 last year), Marcellus at 52 (53 last week, 46 last year) and Haynesville at 49 (48 last week, 45 last year). Other leading states are Oklahoma with 139 rigs (137 last week, 132 last year), Louisiana fourth with 59 (53 last week, 66 last year) and North Dakota with 56 (56 last week, 53 last year).
