just curious if anyone knows why a producing well (s) would suddently drop so much. I have two producing in Atascosa, initial productions about 14000/mo each and now down to around 3,000 each a month/ they have only been producing a year. just curious if operator might do this on purpose for any reason or if the oil flow has actually dropped that much. thanks all.
if these are horizontally drilled and fracked wells then this is very typical. A lot of pressure is put into the formation during fracking and the high rate of flowback during initial production is a result of that. A lot of the Barnett shale wells drop to a whisper after a year or so. Since the operator is trying to get the best possible return for the investment they might slow down the flow if it will result in a longer period of production at a slower rate, but better overall results over time. other nearby wells can also affect the rate of production
THanks Andy, they are horizontal wells and they are drilling it appears off of the same vertical penetration from one of these wells which I assumed might slow flow as well. I noticed other producing wells within the same area haven't had as much of a drop as these two though so was just curious. I realized that the first few months of production were high as expected but they had since levelled off to a fairly consistent flow until this December production which both wells dropped half production from their November report. thanks again. Clay
If you had a drop that was way out of trend of decline you had been observing then something like another well being drilled nearby could have an effect. Other reasons for a sharp drop could be maintenance issues. if they are on pump then mechanical problems could be a problem. When wells go on the pump various problems begin to show. There is evidence that nearby wells do affect production
Andy, you really know this stuff. it's hard on guys like me over in Florida to understand all of this. the operator is Cabot OIl and they seem to be pretty up and front about dealings in the past. I bet you are right though that this could be a pump mechanical problem because it went from 7,000 in nov to 3000 on both wells. thanks so much just hoping it's not a bad well...really helping with kids in college having a little extra we hadn't planned for. They have 6 more permits on the 800 acres we have interest in as well so maybe long run we will be blessed.
