My in-laws recently received tax statements for mineral rights they do not believe they own. In researching we have contacted the current operator. (Who recently purchased from another operator.) They said the account was on hold because lack of W9 and would not discuss until we sent in. We did this and now they sent them a check. In the conversations we have told them we have no knowledge of ownership in this county and believe there is an ownership record error on their end. They say there is nothing in account to show ownership and is ok to cash check. What do I ask and who do I ask for proof of ownership?
Sometimes people inherit from unknown relatives. You can ask the Division Order analyst for a copy of the paragraph from the title opinion that shows who your in-laws inherited from.

Sammy, depending upon the state and county where the minerals are located you may be able to conduct an online search for relatives who may have owned property. This post is not legal, tax or investment advice. Reading or responding to this post does not create an attorney/client relationship.
