Could anyone help me out. My family has about 300 acres of mineral rights in Robertson county right outside of Franklin Texas. The lease is in the JM Viesca Survey Abstract 46, Georgette Smith lease. Is there any new action in this area? Any help/info would be greatly appreciated!
Don’t see any recent permits in your survey but things are happening not far away.
Comstock is drilling several horizontal Cotton Valley wells a couple of miles further north toward New Baden. They haven’t reported results yet but last July they completed a Cotton Valley well another mile north of where they are now drilling that in the first 8 months has produced over 6 BCF.
Hawkwood that had wells at the south end of the A-46 hadn’t done much recently but in 2021 they were acquired by Wildfire Energy. Last week Wildfire announced acquiring Chesapeake’s Brazos Valley operations. Wildfire, with a bunch of new venture capital behind them, appears ready to drill. Wildfire was formed in 2019 by the management of Wildhorse Resources right after Chesapeake paid $4 Billion to acquire their company, so those guys have a knowledge of the area and a track record on drilling. Chesapeake’s purchase right before the start of COVID and oil prices cratering couldn’t have been worse, and Wildfire has now bought back the majority of those same assets for $1.2 Billion.
The thing that looks unusual about your area are the number of different producing formations. It’s probably more likely for gas than oil but with everything from the Bossier and Austin Chalk down to the Cotton Valley showing potential prospects for the future should be good. If you get lease offers you probably what to push to include depth clauses.
Thank you for your response!
It was leased back in the 90s and has one oil well producing, I was just wondering if there was any recent activity
Your acreage in the Viesca Survey is just south of an area where Aethon and Comstock have leased or acquired acreage for a new Lower Bossier/Haynesville deep gas play. Comstock has recently completed two wells that have shown highly successful early results, and Aethon recently finished drilling their first well, now waiting for the frac job.
The leasing follows a southwest to northeast trend, following Highway 79 from Franklin all the way up to Oakwood in Leon County. Most of the leasing is northeast of your acreage.
It appears that the leasing focus does not include the Viesca Survey at this point, but that could change at a later date.
