A land company lied to me and offered to buy oil and mineral rights in Tyler County. I told him that the will only left rights to me in Wetzel. He told me that the person who inherited Tyler agreed to give me half of the money from the sale of Tyler. The land company only agreed to do this if I would sell my rights in the Church District of Wetzel. He sent the papers for me to sign for both counties. I have found out that the person that inherited Tyler rights never said they would give me anything and they are not selling to the land company. I feel like the land company was trying to blackmail me. Any thoughts?
Assuming that you did not sign any documents, then you do not have a loss. Lying to you is not blackmail. In the future, be sure get every detail in writing, not verbally, from the landman and make sure that the language and terms are absolute, not “maybe” or “if” type wording. And be wary of proposals and offers.
