If a well is producing but not complete, how long does it take for the well to move to complete?
A well cannot safely produce without being “completed” (most of the time). The well must have the proper protective casing, production liner and safety valves at the top (in simple terms). They may test a well for a few hours before final completion, but they will stop that and complete properly. The timing depends upon what type of well. A shallow vertical well will have a completely different set of requirements versus a two mile horizontal well. Also depends upon the seasonal weather and perhaps the pricing of the product. If you tell where you are, then you may get a more specific answer.
Generally speaking, the phases of a well are, in order:
- Permitting
- Drilling
- Completing
- Producing
- Plugging
A well that is producing has, by definition, already been completed. Sometimes the regulatory agency will still show a well as “Waiting on Completion”, or “Completing” even after the well is producing, but that is just a lag in the paperwork.
