Well site building

Hi all. There is a new drilling site being built 1000 ft from my property is there anything I should expect? Is it dangerous ?

The safety of living near a drilling site depends on a number of factors, including the type of drilling, the depth of the well, the quality of the construction, and the regulatory oversight. In general, living within 1000 feet of a drilling site is considered safe, but there are some potential risks to be aware of.

Here are some things you can expect:

  • Noise and vibration: Drilling and production activities can generate noise and vibration, which can be annoying and disruptive.
  • Air pollution: Drilling and production activities can release pollutants into the air, such as dust, fumes, and gases. These pollutants can be harmful to human health, especially for people with respiratory problems.
  • Water pollution: Drilling and production activities can also contaminate water supplies, both groundwater and surface water. This can lead to health problems, such as gastrointestinal illness and cancer.
  • Fire and explosion risk: There is always a risk of fire or explosion at a drilling site. This is a serious safety hazard, and it is important to be aware of the risks and take precautions.

If you are concerned about the safety of living near a drilling site, you can contact the drilling company and ask about their safety procedures. You can also contact your local government to find out about the regulations that apply to drilling in your area.

Here are some additional tips for staying safe near a drilling site:

  • Keep windows and doors closed during drilling and production activities.
  • Avoid breathing in dust or fumes.
  • Do not drink or use water from wells that may be contaminated.
  • Be aware of the fire and explosion risks.
  • Report any safety concerns to the drilling company or your local government.

Overall, the risks of living near a drilling site are relatively low. However, it is important to be aware of the potential hazards and take precautions to stay safe.

I’m concerned about fracking

What are your concerns?

Genuinely curious. Non ChatGPT answers por favor.

Silica dust and diesel exhaust

Ok, fair, those are things that will probably be present. I don’t know that it’s much of a threat. I spent days on frac sites never really giving the whole thing much of a thought beyond hearing protection. Ymmv.

Lots of fine silica dust in the air along with diesel exhaust. There’s children around and old folks. Don’t want silicosis

I should get OSHA involved

Fracking of wells began in 1949. Millions of wells with not many problems but they do happen because we are human. Fracking takes a couple of weeks so maybe a vacation should be planned.

Fracking is great by not by my property

Drilling and fracking can reduce value of adjacent property by up to 9%

We live surrounded by fracked wells in all directions. Property values have tripled in 10 years (Thanks Charles Schwab HQ!). But that’s just an anecdote and not actual data. Maybe it would be worth 4x without the wells there.

IMO, it’s good to question things but there is a non-zero possibility that you are over thinking the risks. Vacation may be the move. Good luck.

I just don’t want silica dust getting in to water and air. It’s a nuisance and OSHA recognizes silicosis

My understanding is OSHA has been involved in this topic for quite some time and oil operators had until June 2021 to put better safety measures in place for this issue. Reading up on this silicon dust you mention, it’s in a lot of things not just the sand used in fracking. But again my understanding is the hazard is to the workers at the fracking site sending the sand down hole, not the general public, especially 1000 feet away.

When the sand is conveyed to the top of the blender 30 ft in the air the fine silica breaks out and flows with the wind. At night it flows in streams right to houses and water

Don’t confuse rural with residential. People live nearby

When they blow sand from trucks to sandking it blows the hatch open with silica dust
