What to do with inherited mineral rights

My wife and her siblings recently inherited mineral rights that have passed down a couple of generations. The rights are to land in Winkler County, Texas. I know there are producing wells on the land and I have seen some other discussion on here about that area. They have been made an offer from a company in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We are just looking for some guidance on how to go about finding out how much the rights are worth, how much they might be owed for past production, how to go about getting the money if any is owed, etc. If anyone had some step by step guidance or can tell us who we might need to talk to, it would be appreciated.

You need to make sure that each of the heirs files their name and address in the Winkler County Courthouse along with the probate or trust information that grants them title. Then you need to get familiar with the Texas Railroad Commission site. You can look up your descriptions of acreage and see what wells are producing and who the operators are. They need to contact each operator and tell them that they inherited and ask what they need to do to get into pay status. Also check the Texas Treasurer’s office for any unclaimed money. You are probably getting offers because someone knows something and wants to make a profit off of you. The RRC will show if there are new permits on your land. Start with those steps before entertaining any offers because you will be learning more along the way. Ask tons of questions!
